Off to Canada
Brampton family decide to emigrate
The dawn of 1957 heralds a new life of Mr Charles Andrews (39) of 11 Knollbeck Lane, Brampton, his wife, Alice (36) and their five children.
The family are to emigrate to Canada. After many months of interviews and medical examinations Mr Andrew has just been informed that formalities are now completed. He will sail in advance of his family on the liner “Saxonia” from Liverpool on Friday, March 22 and will dock at Halifax, Nova Scotia, six days later.
A 64 hour train journey will take him to Winnipeg, where he will establish a home for his family. Mrs Andrews and the children will follow within six months. The children are Joan Ann (15), Clifford (12), Sarah (7), Charles (2 ½) and Allan (eight months).
Mr Andrews has spent all his working life in the mines, mostly at Manvers Main and Houghton Main. He actually started a milk round and has been barred by the Cooperative society three years ago. He has not yet sought employment in Canada but is confident he will have no difficulty in obtaining similar work.
When Mr and Mrs Andrews decided to emigrate there they were hovering between Canada and Australia, but decided to choose Canada because it had more to offer in the way of housing, accommodation and employment.
Miss Randall said glancing through a Canadian newspaper he saw hundreds of advertisements for houses and jobs of every description. Winnipeg is being recommended to him by an official at Canada house. He has never previously been abroad. He volunteered for the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the Second World War but was rejected on the grounds that mining was a reserved occupation. The nearest he got to active service was as a member of the 61st West Riding (Brampton) home guard.
Mr Andrews is well known in the village, particularly among customers of the Bulls Head Hotel where he works as a waiter at weekends. He was responsible for forming the Brampton branch of the Barnsley supporters club and is now a delegate.
He never misses a Barnsley home match and travel to away games whenever possible. “I shall miss the football matches most of all”, he says.
