MIDLAND LEAGUE.

Wombwell Beaten by Penalty Goal at Nottingham.

Nottingham Forest Res. 1  Wombwell 0

Nottingham Forest Res. opened the Midland League campaign against Wombwell, at the City ground, yesterday, and after a moderate game managed to snatch a victory just before the finish.

The visitors very early on asserted themselves with considerable effect, but after Thompson had relieved the ituation, the Wombwell goalkeeper had a severe testing at the hands of Bancroft, Mills, and Kirby, and only his fine custodianship saved the Yorkshiremen from disaster.

Exchanges then became more even, and both teams were seen in the picture alternately. Bennett having to deal with awkward attempts from Rounds and T. Smelt, while at the other end Kirby shot over from good position.

At half-time the score sheet, was still blank. and but for a penalty awarded against Severns for hands five minutes off the end, the result would in all probability have been a draw. Thompson, however, successfully converted the kick.
