No Change but Majorities Down
Most interesting statistical detail revealed by South Yorkshire’s General Election results declared on Friday was that while all the retiring Labour members were returned with bumper majorities, in each case their majorities were less than at the 1950 General Election.
The successful candidates were: the Rt. Hon. W. Paling (Dearne Valley), Mr. H. E. Holmes Hemsworth), Mr. H. G. McGhee (Penistone) and the Rt. Hon. T. Williams (Don Valley).
The total Labour vote in these four constituencies was 163,040 and the total Conservative vote 44,115. In 1950 the Labour vote was 163,122, the Liberal and Conservative vote 45,055 and the Community vote 1,007.
