New Dearne Valley Water Board President

November 1937

Mexborough and Swinton Times November 19, 1937

At a meeting of the Wombwell branch of the British Legion last weekend, Mr. Torn Beswick, engineer and manager to the Dearne Valley Water Board, was elected President in place of Dr. W. R. Dickinson, who, after holding the office for eight or nine years, has resigned on account of pressure of work.

The resignation was accepted with great reluctance, the branch being unanimous in their appreciation of the great part played by Dr. Dickinson in upholding the status of the Legion and carrying the branch through difficult times. The Legion in Wombwell has never been so strong in numbers and influence as at the present time.

The meeting passed a resolution thanking Dr. Dickinson for his services and assuring him that his name would always be honoured in the branch. It was only on an assurance that Dr. Dickinson had definitely made up his mind to retire that Mr. Beswicde could be persuaded to assume the office.
