Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 26 September 1902
Neighbours Row at Low Valley.
Sarah Elizabeth Wiston, married woman, Low Valley, was summoned by Julia Ward, married woman, of the same locality, for an assault alleged to have been committed on the 19th inst.
There was a cross summons, Wiston charging Ward with assault.
Wiston said the other woman struck her in the face with her face, “Then I started upon her in self-defence,” she added.
The Chairman: And did you give her one or two knocks?
ln reply to this both Ward and Wiston exclaimed together, “Yes, sir.” (Laughter.)
The further evidence showed that the summonses the result of an ordinary neighbours’ squabble.
The Chairman said it was a case of six of one and half-a-dozen of the other. Both were to blame for quarrelling and fighting, and each would have to pay the costs.
