Recruits For Wombwell and Darfield A.T.C.
A resolution formally authorising application for permission to form a Wombwell and Dartleld District Squadron of the Air Tralning Corps was passed at a meeting of the newly formed A.T.C. Civil Committee at Wombwell Town Hall on Monday.
Later, recruiting for the new squadron was opened In the Library Lecture Hall and within an hour nearly fifty prospective cadets between the ages of 16 and 18 were enrolled.
The meeting over which Mr. J. Upton (chairman), presided, passed a resolution recommending the appointment of Mr. A. el. Taylor, “Blrkhill,” Herningfield, as Company Commander. This will be submitted to the Commandant of the A.T.C. Mr. Taylor has been seconded for this purpose from the Home Guard, in which he has served with commissioned rank. He is an old boy of Barnsley Grammar School, ex-captain of Mitchell Main Yorkshire Council cricket team, and a former member of Tankersley Golf Club.
The Chairman reported on a visit to the Wath Squadron, and said both Wath and Barnsley had promised the new unit every possible support. Wombwell and Darfield would be established as a separate squadron, composed of “sections” of 25 and “flights” of 50. It was hoped that various works or organisations would form their own “sections” or “flights”, thus preserving some degree of entity and encouraging competition for efficiency.
On the recommendation of the, Chairman and Commanding Officer, the Committee co-opted Coun. Fred Bly, of Illsley Road, Darfield giving additional representation to that section of the district.
The following appointments were submitted to the meeting and approved: Hon Chaplain Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney, Rector of Wombwell: hon. Medical Officer. Dr. Leslie Taylor; hon. secretary and acting adjutant, Mr. K. M. Walker, M.A., Wombwell Grange, Clerk to Wombwell U.D.C.: hon. treasurer,Mr. E. Coult, Accountant to Darfield U.D.c.
Among those nominated to a panel i from which officers and instructors may be drawn, were: Mr. C. Taylor (postmaster at Wombwell). Mr. J. L. Hay (general manager of Wombwell Main Collieries), Mr. Kenneth Miner (headmaster of Snape Hill Road Council Schools, Darfield), Mr. K. M. Walker. Mr. Mackridge (radio). Mr. S. J. Lisle (surveyor at Wombwell Main Colliery), and Dr. L. Taylor (physical training).
It was decided that the Squadron seek early affiliation to an aerodrome, a particular establishment being nominated. After enrolment cadets were instructed to report next Monday for medical examination. Further enrolments will be made at Wombwell Library from 7 to 9 next Monday evening.
