Narrow Escape

A little girl named Abigail Hardeman, the daughter of Private Ernest Hardeman, 2nd Y. and L. Regiment, 12, Gower Street, Wombwell, fell into the Dearne and Dove Canal, Wombwell, on Sunday afternoon, and narrowly escaped being drowned.

She was seen in the water near the embankment by John Roberts, miner, Station Road, Wombwell, who was fishing near the spot. Roberts was able to reach the child and pull her out without entering the water.
