N.U.R. Secretary

The new secretary of the Wombwell branch of the National Union of Railwaymen is Mr. James Davey of 13, Rother Street, Brampton, Wombwell.

He was elected by 77 votes to six and succeeds the late Mr. Torn Harrop, who was secretary for 21 years.

Born at Exeter, Davey is 41 years of age. Joining up at the age of 17, he served for four years in the Great War—with the York and Lancasters in Greece, from which country he was invalided with malaria and with the Northumberland Fusiliers. On demobilisation he came to this district to work on the Railways as a platelayer in the engineer’s department and is now sub-ganger at Wombwell station.

His wife is Wombwell born and bore the old Wombwell name of Brown.

Mr Davey has previously been vice chairman of the Wombwell branch of the N.U.R.and a member of the committee.

Mr Davies chief hobby is ambulance work. He has competed with railway teams and is at present instructor of the railway ambulance class at Wombwell Station.

Mrs Davey is a member of the Brampton and West Melton division of the Saint John’s ambulance Brigade and passed her fourth-grade examination last week. Mr Davey has been a member of the Brampton and West Melton Division for many years
