Municipal Elections – New Interest

March 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times March 18, 1927

A new element of interest was introduced into the municipal election campaign at Wombwell this week by the announcement that Mr Thomas Bird (photo) has accepted nomination by the Labour Party of the candidate for the South West ward.

He will oppose Mr W Thomson, manager of the Wombwell Main Collieries. Mr Bird succeeded Mr Joseph Hall as checkweighman and secretary of the Cortonwood branch of the Yorkshire Miners Association, and has held office in the branch for 16 years.

At one time was prominent in Barnsley district cricket, and played for Ardsley for over 20 years. The local Labour Party has now candidates for each of the five wards.
