Director of North Wales Coal Company
Mr. T. S. Charlton, J.P., Managing Director of the Cortonwood Colliery, has been appointed a director of the United Westminster and Wrexham Collieries Ltd., the owners of Gresford Colliery. He will remain at Cortonwood where, under his direction, important developments have been carried out.
Mr. Charlton is regarded as one of the leading mining engineers in the north of England. He is a Master of Science of Leeds University, a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, and one of the two technical members of the National Coal Board, one of the most important bodies in British Mining.
Mr. Charlton is a son of Mr. W. J. Charlton O.B.E., a mines inspector of Newcastle- on-Tyne. After being under manager for the Shelton (Staffs) Iron, Steel and Coal Company, he was appointed to a special job of reconstruction at Gresford after the disastrous explosion of 1934. He re-opened the pit and had it in full production again within 12 months without a single casualty. He came to Cortonwood five years ago.
