Midland League.
Grimsby Reserves Held Up at Boston.
Mexborough Slump Ends.
Boston gave one of their best displays of the season against Grimsby Town Reserves yesterday, and forced the Midland League runners-up to a draw of 2 —2. Armitage and Coglin scored for Grimsby, and Robinson and Pearson for the home team.
After earning only one point of 22 possible, Mexborough, at home yesterday, gained a welcome 3 —0 victory over Frickley Colliery, in wet weather, before 1,500 spectators. Mexborough were the better team all departments, and their goal-scorers were Wassall (2) and Wilson, who was in brilliant form and the best forward on the field. The young home backs, Annables and Greig, wore very good. Frickley were disjointed and lacked thrust. Their most prominent players were Capstick, the goalkeeper, and Smith, centre-forward.
Gainsborough Trinity found goal-scoring easy at home against Shirebrook, who were not strongly represented. The score of 8 —2 in Gainsborough’s favour indicated the run of the play, and but for smart work by Parkhouse in the Shirebrook goal, the score would have been heavier. Parkhouse kept the goals down to two against his side in the first half, but six were added after the interval Gainsborough, who were well served by Mills at outside-right, scored through Mills (3). Green (2). Dodsworth, Ross, and Wilbourn. Baker and Wilkins scored for Shirebrook.
Barnsley Win Comfortably.
Barnsley Reserves, after missing many chances in the first half, gained a comfortable victory over Doncaster Rovers Reserves by 4—0 at Oak well. Thanks to the splendid goal-keeping of Tate, Barnsley could only get one goal before the interval, Chivers being the scorer. In the second half. Smalley (2) and Stanyon added to the score. Smalley and Murfin were Barnsley’s best forwards, with Chivers enterprising in the centre. In defence, Ridyard and Holmes were outstanding. Beresford played a constructive game at inside-left for the visitors, and Scott was outstanding in defence.
A penalty goal scored Denaby in the second half decided Wombwell’s fate in the ‘’Derby” game at Wombwell yesterday. Taylor scored with the penalty kick awarded for “handling.” The game was evenly contested, but overkeenness spoiled it from the spectators’ point of view. In the first half Wombwell showed superior combination, but unsteadiness spoiled many goal-scoring chances. Denaby were the stronger side in the second half, and clever halfback play was a feature of their game. Hughes and Smith were outstanding. Brayshaw and Waring showed good form for Wombwell.
On waterlogged ground and in heavy rain Scarborough obtained their victory since February 28th yesterday, when they beat Hull City Reserves 2—1. Scarborough scored twice within the first five minutes through Maskill and Severn (penalty), and Hull reduced the arrears after 30 minutes when Speed shot into an empty net after Turner had saved brilliantly. Scarborough, although Hickman, their outside-left, was badly handicapped through injuries during the second half, did the greater part of the attacking. Hull exploited off-side tactics successfully, but their goal had some narrow escapes. Hill played his 100th consecutive game with Scarborough.
Lively Chesterfield Forwards.
Rotherham United Reserves were beaten 5—2 at Chesterfield yesterday, though early on a slip by Machent allowed Hick open the score for them. Wilson made a welcome return to the Chesterfield attack, and his scheming was a feature. Wallbanks was also brilliant left back and equalised with a penalty, Wilson putting Chesterfield ahead. The second half opened sensationally as, after Andrews had worked a perfect position, Walker scored. Baldwin followed with two goals. In the last minute Hick scored again for Rotherham. Rotherham made the mistake of dallying with the ball. Chesterfield had a capital half-back line, in which Robb was outstanding.
Grantham gave a sound all-round display beat Lincoln City Reserves 2 —0. Mann dribbled finely to open their account after seven minutes’ play, and ten minutes later Sullivan crowned a glorious effort by obtaining a second goal. The Lincoln forwards tried hard, but were met by a powerful defence, and further scoring occurred up to the interval. Play in the second half greatly favoured Grantham, but they were not able to score again, though Sullivan struck the crossbar.
Newark beat Loughborough 2—1 at Newark. Hall and Roseboom scored for the winners and Harris replied for Loughborough.
