Mexbro’ Head Hails From Wombwell

Miss Hilda Varney. 183, Barnsley Road, Wombwell for 18 years a member of the teaching staff at John Street Council has been appointed headmistress of Mexborough Garden St, Junior Girls’ School, to take effect from the new year.

Miss Varney attended John Street Council School as a pupil where she gained a scholarship to Barnsley Girls’ High School. She has had teaching experience at Wombwell Barnsley Road Junior School, Tingley, West Ardsley, near Wakefield, and Jump Council School.

A native of Wombwell, Miss Varney is a leading figure at Barnsley Road Methodist Church, Wombwell, with which her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Varney, have been associated for over 50 years.

She is a District Commissioner of Girl Guides and has been captain of the Wombwell Barnsley Road Methodist company of Rangers since it was formed 17 years ago until its disbandment recently. She is a playing member of Wombwell. Thespians Amateur Dramatic Society.

Miss Varney ‘s three sisters were also in the teaching profession before marriage.
