Lucky Escapes in Wombwell Accident.

Two men were lucky to escape with their lives when a motor lorry overturned at Wombwell yesterday morning. The accident occurred about 6.30 at the junction of Summer Lane and Hough Lane, at which point four roads converge.

A heavy lorry, owned by Mr. Tom Lee, haulage contractor, Barnsley Road, Wombwell, was descending Hough Lane, and it was the intention of the driver to go round the corner on the right into Summer Lane. Half-way round he found his way partly obstructed by another lorry, to avoid which it was necessary to swerve a little to the right. In doing this, the lorry overbalanced and eventually turned over against the gable-end a house.

The driver, Fred Cartledge (22), of 44, Gower Street, Wombwell, and his mate, Aubrey Daiis (16). of 17, Main Street, Wombwell, both went over with the lorry, and when they were able extricate themselves, was found that was practically uninjured, and Davis was suffering from nothing worse than a cut over an eye.

Cartledge said he felt the lorry going over, and before he could decide what to do he found himself thrown through the windscreen.

He remarked that it is his birthday.
