Labour Walkover

Mr E. Wainwright Returned at Wombwell

There being no other nomination., Mr Edwin Wainwright, of 7, Kingsway, Wombwell, the nominee of the local. Labour Party, has been elected a member of the Wombwell Urban Council to sit as a representative of the South West Ward until 1941. The vacancy was caused by the retirement of Mr. Frank Collindridge, M.P. for Barnsley. Mr. D. Cookson, manager of Wombwell Main Coilieries. informed the “Times” on Friday that although he had had many invitations to contest the seat, pressure of other responsibilities made it impossible for him to do so. Mr. Cookson retired from the Council three years ago.

As stated in this journal last week, Mr. Wainwright is a member of the committee of the Darfield Main branch of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Association, of which his father, Mr. John Wainwright, was one time president.

He is also secretary of the Darfield Main Checkweigh Fund. At 30 years of age he will be the youngest member of the Wombwell U.D.C.
