In East Africa

When Miss Gwennie England (28), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. England, 10, Milton Street, Wombwell, left this country to accept a post on the staff of a hospital at Zomba, Nyasaland, East Africa, she omitted to pack a pistol.  Arriving at her destination, she had one handed to her.

In her amazement she asked “What’s this for?” and the reply was that there were dangerous animals and reptiles about.  The incident is mentioned in her letters.

Recently Mrs. England received from the Colonial Office a telegram that their daughter was dangerously ill, but a week later came another message stating that she was now out of danger.

Miss England was a scholarship student at Wath Grammar School, going there from Park Street Schools, Wombwell.

She left school to take up nursing at the age of 16, and has been on the staffs of Rainworth Hospital, Mansfield, Becket Hospital, Barnsley, King Edward Memorial Hospital, Ealing and the Royal Masons Hospital, Hammersmith, holding the last mentioned post for five years.   She is S.R.N. and C.M.B.
