Hot Water Polo Final – Remarkable Game – Wombwell 5 Pontefract 4

It took nearly an hour to decide the Yorkshire No. 2 District Water Polo Championship in the Wombwell batlis, last night. Eventually Wombwel defeated Pontefract 5—4, after two periods of extra time had played.

The game went at thrilling pace all through, and while the ball was in the net nine times, neither side was more than a goal ahead at any period. Wombwell were the first to score and then the sides secured goal for goal. There were frequent interruptions for fouls and in the course of the game players were sent out of the water on no fewer than live occasions.

The strain on the players was terrific and Ackroyd, of Pontefract, had retire with cramp.

Mr J. A. Morton, vice-president of the Yorkshire A.S.A., Sheffield, was a capable referee, but in one case his decision was disputed. Pontefract claiming that goal Womb well was wrongly allowed.

The scorers were Hawkins (.4). and J. Hessam for Wombwcll. and Ackroyd (2) Brown and Taylor for Pontefract.

Pontefract Swimmers in a Remarkable Game.

The swimmers had to remain in the water for an hour before the final of the Yorkshire (No. 2 District) Water Polo Championship, which was played at Wombwell, could be decided.

Two periods of extra time were necessary. Wombwell wanted to replay, but Pontefract insisted on playing to a finish.

Wombwell won by 5 goals to 4.

There were frequent interruptions for fouls, and on no fewer than five occasions players were sent out of the water. The strain on the teams was great, and Ackroyd, one of the Pontefract players, had to retire with cramp. The scorers were; Hawkins (4) and J. Hess am for Wombwell, and Ackroyd (2), Brown, and Taylor for Pontefract.
