Heroic Wombwell Miners.

At a gathering of the workmen employed at the Mitchell Main Colliery, Wombwell, gold watches were presented to a number of the employees who have been awarded distinctions during the war.

The chair was occupied by Mr. J. W. Halmshaw, general manager, who was supported by Colonel T. W. H. Mitchell, managing director of the company, Mrs. and Miss Mitchell, the latter being on leave after three years’ work in France.

Miss Mitchell presented watches to the following :—C.S.M. W. Barraclough, D.C.M., M.M. ; S. H. Fisher, M.M. and Croix Guerre; S. C. Swift, M.M.; S. W. Lowther. M.M.; C. C. Davis, M.M.; Bombardier B. Slater, M.M. ; Privates A. Sykes, M.M., T. Lockwood, M.M., J. Skidmore, M.M., S. Walker, M.M., J. McKenny, M.M., J. Brookes, M.M. ; Corporals J. Billington, M.M., T. Gledhill, M.M.; Private A. Berry.

Mr. C. Flint, the local secretary, explained that 91 of the workmen who joined the Forces had lost their lives in the war, and the employees had subscribed close upon £4,000 to their dependents and in addition had given £12,274 4s. Id. to the local patriotic fund and £549 Is. 6d. towards the convoy of 50 motor ambulances which were presented to the Red Cross by the collieries.
