Mexborough and Swinton Times April 6, 1928
Mrs Emma Mellor, wife of Mr. John William Mellor, a member of the Wombwell Urban Council, had the honour of being returned at the head of the poll in the Guardians elections at Wombwell. At the “first time of asking” she received 249 votes, over 78 per cent. of those who went to the polling booths putting a cross against her name.
Mrs. Mellor has taken a prominent part in social and political movements, but this was the first time she had accepted nomination for any public appointment. During the coal dispute she was responsible for the administration of a distress fund of over £3,000. This was distributed in the form of food, clothing, and other necessaries.
She is secretary of the women’s section of the Wentworth Division Labour Party, a member of the Wombwell Education Sub-Committee, and closely interested in infant welfare and hospital work.
