Wombwell Spring A Surprise.

Splendid Second Half Performance.

Grimsby Town Reserves 1, Wombwell 3This

Grimsby Reserve forwards failed at Grimsby yesterday, and Wombwell took advantage of their laxity to score an unexpected win. Grimsby spent a good deal of time in the first half in the vicinity of the Wombwell goal but only once got the ball in the net. Some of the credit for that goes to the Wombwell defenders. Stevenson made several good saves; but there were plenty of opportunities of beating’ him which the Grimsby forwards made but weak efforts to take take.

Here, the Scot, fish right winger, made the opening for TWELL to score just before the interval.

Soon after the start of the second half VARDEN equalised and the game then took a completely. Different course.

A marked change occurred in the play of the Wombwell forwards, who cut out all frills with safer goal. The result was that they took the lead about halfway through the “45”, when BRAMLEY followed up a free kick and headed in.

Wombwell got better and better towards the end and after the double was scarcely recognisable as the same team. Grimsby made efforts to recover the initiative and made one prolonged attack; but when that was reposed it was for Wombwell to break away at once and PARDEN to score easily.

Pardon this was an enterprising leader, but Adet – once more taking the role of forward – put the sting into the attack. Once all did get the upper hand their halves the Grimsby forwards little scope. The Wombwell defence was sound throughoutWombwell
