Grantham Romp to Victory.
Grantham 10 Wombwell 0
Put it down to a weak Wombwell side or anything else, and still the sheer triumph of Grantham’s 10-0 victory over the Yorkshire side on Thursday cannot be appreciably diminished. It was sustained for more of a type which before has come only in dazzling flashes that did it. Grantham’s success was as complete as Womb well’s collapse.
For not more than ten minutes did the visitors look like scoring: the rest of the game Grantham spent in target practice. And it scorns—though past performances in this respect arc contradictory—that these Grantham forwards can shoot as hard and true the next—when the need is least. Grantham gave an earnest of what was to follow a first-minute goal from Pearson. But too often these showy starts have taken the crowd in. This time, though the brilliant form of the opening minutes was kept up, and the Wombwell goal mouth was soon the scene of lively doings.
Kirk came along with the next goal, and Death was sharp off his heels with a penalty. In the second half Grantham just seemed to score when was necessary to keen the game interesting. Goals were added by Dudley (4), Pearson (2) and Kirk.
