Golden Wedding – Wombwell bride (69) makes her own cake.

Mr Thomas Boldy (71) and his wife Bertha (69), of 22, Wath Road, Wombwell, are preparing to celebrate their golden wedding.

Two married sons and daughters living at home are giving them a party to be held at the Ship Inn, Wombwell, on Saturday, October 1, but Mrs. Boldy had insisted on making her own golden wedding cake.

The couple were married at Wombwell Parish Church of September 29th, 1910, and they have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One of their sons, died eight years ago.

No Rolling Stones

Mr Boldy was born at West Melton, but was married from a house on the Wath Road side of Wombwell Junction, his bride at the time living in Brampton Road, Wombwell Junction, and shared the same backyard. Throughout their happy married life the couple have lived at their present address only a few yards from where they spent their childhood. Mrs Boldy has never lived more than a few yards from the house in which she was born.

Mr Boldy first went to Broomhill School and then moved to Park Street Council School, making the move when Park Street School was built. He started work at Darfield Main colliery at the age of 13, and finished at Wath Main colliery six years ago. Most of his working life was spent at the coalface. Six years before his retirement he went on to the surface after having been injured in an accident. He is proud of his retired miners badge and certificate.

War Veteran

During the First World War Mr Boldy served with the Barnsley Battalion of the York and Lancaster regiment in France and the middle East. He went back to Malta after having shrapnel wounds in a thigh and saw the war through to the end.

The younger days Mr Boldy played football for Wombwell and Cortonwood Methodist churches and later develop a liking for the quieter pastime of angling. It is expected that about 50 to 60 members of the family and close friends will attend the party, but any other well-wishers will be with them in spirit in that happy event.
