Mexborough and Swinton Times December 30 , 1939
Golden Wedding.
Just over 50 years ago Mr. James Buxton, now of 20, Brameld Road, Swinton, who then resided at Shipcroft, Wombwell, was standing at the front door of his parent’s home with his brother.
A young lady stopped by a shop window on the opposite side of the road and began to look into it. Mr. Buxton and his brother were discussing marriage, and suddenly the latter exclaimed, ” There’s the young woman you ought to have,” indicating the then Miss Slater, who was still looking into the shop window.
Mr. Buxton’s brother introduced them to each other and four months later they were married at Wombwell Parish Church by the Rev. W. Ware on Christmas Day. Mr. Buxton was then 20, and Mrs. Buxton 19, and neither have any regrets about their early marriage.
Mr. Buxton has been a miner all his working life. He has worked at Cortonwood, Mitchell Main, Silverwood and finally Manvers Main Collieries. He began work at ten years of age and retired four and a half years ago, after having seen 33 years’ service at Manvers Main Collieries. Mrs. Buxton is a native of Swinton and Mr. Buxton was born at Denaby. They spent the first ten years of their married life at Wombwell and then went into the Rotherham area for about five years.
After that they came to Swinton and have been here for 33 years. Mr. and Mrs. Buxton have seven children living, 23 grandchildren, two of whom are now serving with the Forces, and three great-grandchildren. Three of their sons served during the last war, and all survived, but eight months afterwards their eldest son met with an accident in the pit on his birthday and died a fortnight later.
On Christmas Day they had a family party.
