Mr. Lax was born at Staincross, but came to Wombwell when he was six. His father Samuel Lax, worked at Cortonwood, and Mr. Lax himself started there when he was twelve years old. He remained at Cortonwood up to getting a set of tools, and then moved to Mitchell Main where he was the oldest collier when he finished work there nine years ago.

Mrs. Lax is a daughter of Mr. Thomas Wroe, of St. Helen’s Street. Elsecar, who worked at Earl Fitzwilliam’s Colliery for 63 years. At the time of her marriage she was a servant at Lundhill Tavern.

Mr. Lax is 73, and his wife 69. Both enjoy good health for their years. Mr. and Mrs. Lax have had only one child but their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Lax, of Stubbs Road. Wombwell, have restored the average by presenting them with 10 grandchildren.

Before moving to Aldham cottages 37 years ago Mr and Mrs Lax lived in George Street, Wombwell
