Father’s Maintenance
Order Against Wombwell Farmer
At Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday, George Ogden, a farmer, of Wombwell, was ordered to contribute 5s. per week for the maintenance of his father, Chas. Ogden, of Rawmarsh.
The order was made in response to an application by the West Riding Public Assistance Committee.
Mr. Cyril Oxborough, relieving officer for the Rawmarsh area, said Charles Ogden was first granted relief on August 4th, 1926. The weekly cost was 15s. a week.
The Rother Valley Guardians’ Committee were unable to find out whether George Ogden was able to contribute to his father’s maintenance and they had made this application so that the magistrates could decide.
Ogden told the magistrates that he was unable to afford anything. The farm comprised 140 acres, and the annual rental was £140. There was a family of eight living on the farm and they were hardly making a living.
