Wombwell Woman’s Death In U.S.A.

The death occurred at Portage, U.S.A., on April 6th, of Mrs. Susanna Lloyd (81), widow of Thomas Lloyd, formerly of Wombwell.  Mrs. Lloyd formerly lived at Mitchell Main and 27 years ago she and her husband went out to make a new home in the States, taking with them fourteen children, twelve of their own and two adopted ones.  They settled at Portage, where they had relatives, and Mr. Lloyd worked in the mines up to within a fortnight of his death, six years ago.  He was then 76 years of age.  He had worked 40 years at Mitchell Main before he went out.  Mr. Lloyd’s mother went to the States many years before him and in her 82nd year she crossed the Atlantic to visit her old home at Wombwell.  She was nearly 90 when she died.

One of the sons, Mr. Ernest Lloyd, went out before his father but returned after three-and-a half-years in the States and is now living at Wombwell.  Neither Mr. Lloyd nor his wife ever saw England again after they had left their native land, although it was always their ambition to return.  After her husband’s death, Mrs. Lloyd retained her home and was looked after by her eldest son, Mr. John Henry Lloyd.  The surviving children are Mrs. Sarah Ann Johnson of Stairfoot; Mr Ernest Lloyd of Wombwell; Mrs. Emily Kay, of Beaverdale U.S.A.; Mr. Joseph Lloyd, of Revloc, U.S.A.; Mrs. John Hibbard, of Nant-y-Glo U.S.A.; Miss Anna Thompson of Portage; Mrs. Lizzie Metzler of Centre County, U.S.A.; Mrs. Ethel Oaks of Johnstown, U.S.A.; Mr. Albert Lloyd of Kelso U.S.A.; Mrs. John Nelson, Ehrenfeld U.S.A.; Mrs. Jennie Bunn of Portage and Mrs. John Henry Lloyd of Portage

She leaves 55 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted at the Evangelical Church and the interment took place at Prospect Cemetery, Portage.
