Eight Runs Short

Mitchell Held Despite Kilner’s Effort

Mitchell Main were unfortunate to miss victory against Elsecar on Saturday by eight runs.  Their failure was a tribute to the steady Elsecar attack. Though Elsecar’s batting on a perfect wicket was somewhat slow it was not of the lack-lustre type. In the early stages the Mitchell Main bowlers had decidedly the better of the argument. Against the keen bowling of E. Evans, Elsecar collapsed badly and there were only 25 runs on the board when four wickets had fallen. Elsecar had Lax and Bamforth to thank for a brilliant stand at a critical period. The partnership realised 83 runs. Lax was the first to return to the pavilion as a result of a catch by E. Broadhead. Bamforth was unfortunate to be run out after scoring 39.

Lax forced the play more than his partner but their dogged defence against sound bowling by Broadhead and Evans was a praiseworthy performance. The rest of the wickets fell for little over 40 runs in as many minutes. The Elsecar innings closed for 142 knocked up in a little over two and a half hours. Mitchell Main were left with only two hours to knock off the score. They opened almost as disastrously as Elsecar. Three wickets had fallen for 17 runs when Colin Kilner (picture) came to the rescue. His 70 not out was the most polished display of the match. His pulling and driving were very attractive and he reached 50 in a little over the hour. Along with J. Senior he made a desperate effort to rub off the score but Elsecar gave few chances. Smith. who finished with 5 for 35, kept a fine length, and Lax often had the Mitchell Mainers baffled. With 15 minutes to go 35 runs were wanted for victory, and it was unfortunate for Mitchell Main that they were just short of victory when the last over was bowled.
