Wombwell’s Safety Win
Doncaster Rovers 0 Wombwell 2
By their splendid win over Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue on Saturday, Wombwell did away with any fears of their having to apply for re-election to the Midland League.
A missed penalty had something to do with their 2-0 success, for had Pattison equalised instead of shooting high over the crossbar the goal might have acted as a tonic which would have enabled Doncaster to finish on top. The chance was missed however, while Wombwell made the most of theirs, and a couple of enterprising wingers got the points for them.
The Rovers were poor markers in the first half for had they shown steadiness in front of goal they would have established a substantial lead before the interval instead of which they found themselves a goal in arrears, ASHMORE having turned to account a centre by Waring. The winger made certain by going close in before shooting thus giving Clarke no possible chance of saving. This was somewhat against the run of the play, but Pattison had his chance when Doncaster were awarded a penalty soon after the interval only to miss the goal altogether.
Later in the game Ashmore presented WARING with a chance similar to the pass from which he himself had given Wombwell the lead, and the winger scored Wombwell’s second goal. The Wombwell defence gave nothing away and there was no further score, although Ward had several shots to deal with. The visitors were best served by Briggs. Waring and Ashmore in the forward line, while the defence was rugged and full of pluck.
