Deputy Clerk At Wombwell

Good service to the local authority and community at Wombwell was rewarded on Tuesday, when Wombwell Urban Council confirmed the appointment of Mr. John George Mellor as part-time deputy clerk.

Mr. Mellor has been at the council offices at Wombwell since 1946 as chief clerk to Mr. Fred Potter, Clerk to the Council.  In that capacity he has come into close contact with public work and members of local authority, all of whom have appreciated his efficiency.

Before 1946 he served in the Royal Air Force in South Africa and India. Mr. Mellor is 38, a native of Wombwell, and lives at 31 West Avenue.  He married Miss Joyce Newton of Wombwell and they have two children.

His parents, County Coun. J. W. Mellor J.P. and Mrs. E. Mellor, are both members of Wombwell Urban Council and both declared their interest and withdrew during discussion of the appointment.  Mr. J. W. Mellor is the oldest member of Wombwell Council, having been a member nearly 50 years.
