Denaby’s Draw Was A Fair Result.

11 October 1969

South Yorkshire Times, October 4th, 1969.

Continuing the pattern of being unable to force full toll in a home game, Wombwell sporting Association drew with Denaby. It looked as though, for a change, a home victory might have to be recorded when Wombwell forced the lead after 35 minutes, and turned round with that goal advantage, but within a quarter of an hour of the resumption those hopes faded when the visitors drew level.

A draw was a fair reflection if the run of the game.

The game was spoiled to some extent by a strong wind. With the wind at their backs Wombwell were first to attack and a good high ball from Pilkington led to a corner. Denaby were next to force the pace with a good run on the right, but a dangerous situation was averted by Layhe.

Former Wombwell player Bob Bennett had to concede a corner when Pilkington looked set to score. England put a good shot just too high for Denaby, and then at the other end Caunt put a good shot just wide of the mark. Another goof shot followed from Pilkington, who has bad luck to see it go just over a top. After 15 minutes in a cross from Pilkington, who had received a great ball from Caunt.

On Wrong Foot.

Denaby resumed on the wrong foot when a clearance by Whitehead (K), was nodded to Oliver, who lobbed the ball just over the Keepers head only to watch it sail over the bar.

Morley headed onto the bar from a pass by Toyne, and Roystone shot wide after a good run. After 15 minutes in the second half Morley glided the ball in for Denaby to draw level. At tis stage play was held up while Denaby keeper Whitehead (K), received attention from the trainer

Oliver again had the ball into the net but the referee ruled that it had been out of play. Royston’s turn now to put over the top, the wind making the ball play all sorts of tricks. Wilde hit the side netting from a corner, and Towne cleared off the line with the keeper looking hopelessly beaten.

Outstanding for Wombwell were Peter Caunt and Len Briscoe.
