Denaby 191 for 9 dec Mitchell Main 57
Denaby selectors must be rather sceptical about choosing Denaby selectors must have been rather sceptical about choosing teenager Peter Taylor (picture) for Saturday’s game in place of pace bowler Johnny Forrest, away on holiday.
But any doubts they had vanished when Peter, playing his first game for the Council side in a seventh wicket stand of 81 with Dick Cory, after six wickets had fallen for 70, putting Denaby in an invincible position against a weakened Wombwell side who had five regulars absent.
Losing the toss, Denaby were put into bat and what appeared to be an easy paced wicket. Opener Arthur Ellis and J Munden scored 21 in the first half hour but in the next few minutes with two devastating overs, Wombwell veteran J Wroe changed the whole complex of the game and Denaby were fighting with their backs to the wall
With wickets falling fast Cory alone mastered the Wombwell attack—until Taylor came in when six wickets were down. The scoring rate more than doubled with Taylor at the wicket and he passed Cory’s score in an many minutes.
Peter had a six into the road and had six 4’s in his hard hit 48 and had given only one chance when he left at 151. Cory went on to make 59 and Richards declared the innings closed shortly afterwards for 191, with the last pair at the wicket —only the second time this season that Denaby have gone through the batting list.
The scoreboard registered only six runs when Mitchell’s opener W. Lilley, was run out attempting a fourth run, and shortly afterwards,at the same score, J. Harston was bowled by Jim Richards and J. Wood (11), who shared in the third wicket stand largest—were the only two Wombwell batsmen to reach, double figures
Skipper Jim Richards finished with the impressive figures of 5 for 20 and Harry Newton had the other 4 for 32.
