County Council Representative

March 1928

Mexborough and Swinton Times March 2, 1928

Mr. J. W. Mellor will therefore stand as Wombwell’s representative on the West Riding County Council for another term of three years at least. Upon this we might congratulate ourselves, for, politics aside, among our local public representatives none attend more diligently to his duties than he.

Mr. Mellor has made a special study of local government and goes to no end of trouble to keep himself acquainted with legislation as it affects local affairs. I should imagine that even the opposition will grant him so much.

Mr. Mellor has been actively associated with the Labour movement for twenty years, and was working hard to further Labour ideals when the cause was much less popular than it is to-day. Like many of his Labour colleagues, he knows what it is like to be reviled and shouted down. Fortunately, as Mr. Mellor would put it (being something of a sportsman) the wicket is not nearly so `sticky” for Labour politicians as it used to be. Therefore, having had the rough, he is not to be grudged the “velvet.”
