Councillor – Tom Newsome

April 1932

Mexborough and Swinton Times, April 8th, 1932

Mr. Tom Newsome was born at Blacker Hill, and is 44 years of age.

His father, Mr. Arthur Newsome, an old resident of Wombwell and one of the first members of the Yorkshire Miners’ Association, died recently.

During the whole of his working life Mr Tom Newsome has been employed at Mitchell Main. Fifteen years ago he was appointed treasurer to the Checkweigh Fund, and in 1927 became delegate of the branch.

Six years ago he successfully opposed Mr. J. J. Neville in the Central ward and sat as a member of the Urban Council for three years, doing useful work for infant welfare. Three years ago he was defeated by Mr. V. E. Burrows and he fought unsuccessfully against Mr. C. Boocock last year. For two years he has been charman of the Hospital Committee and his zeal and enterprise have been largely responsible for the sound re-establishment of that organisation.

He was one of the pioneers of Midland League football in Wombwell and is a director of the Wombwell Club. He has had a lifelong association with the Primitive Methodist Church.
