Council Rejects the ‘Local Lads’ for Cemetery Job

Rejecting a plea that the post should to local man. Wombwell District Council has accepted A committee recommendation that Mr. George Flather, of Brighouse, be appointed clerk superintendent and cemetery curator at £330 year, with house and gas. Mr. Flather will succeed Mr. S. Missing, who has held the post for nearly 30 years, and whose son. Mr. H. Missing, was one the candidates.

Mr. T. Bradley told the Council meeting public opinion was very strong in the matter, as they had Wombwell man who was perfectly suited for the job.

“I would not have opposed this.” He said, “If you had appointed a man of letters. He has only had a year and 10 months’ experience. Mr. Missing has had years.

“Let us help our own lads.”

Mr. J. Rose said he was surprised at Mr. Bradley. Mr. Flather had been at the job all his life.

Mr. E. Wainwrlght said if the local men had the qualifications they would appoint them, but when they were spending public money they should give the post to the best man.
