Coroner’s Inquest at Wombwell

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Dossey Wightman, coroner, held an inquest at the house of Mr E Halliwell, the Ship Inn, Wombwell, touching the death of Benjamin Foster of 5 Milton St Wombwell, who was killed at Darfield Main Colliery on Thursday.

Mr J Gerard, government inspector of mines was present.

It seemed from the evidence of Peter Duffy that the deceased, who was 20 years old was a trammer.

About 8 o’clock on Thursday morning he was boiling in the “softs” when, without the slightest morning, equality of coal from the roof came down with the crash upon him. He was got out by Duffy and others within four minutes, quite dead.

A verdict of “Accidentally killed,” was returned.
