Constable’s New Post.
A familiar face has been lost to Wombwell this week by the departure from the district of Police Constable Sidney Methuen Barker, who has left the force to take up a position as civilian aero-engine instructor at Henlow, Bedfordshire.
Mr. Barker was born at Sheffield and educated at Doncaster Grammar School. For a short time he was in business at Doncaster, where his father, Major Herbert Barker, retired from, the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, still lives. At 15 ½ he joined the Royal Air Force and for, twelve years served in Trans-Jordania, Palestine, and Egypt.
He was .on service in Palestine at the time of the disturbances in 1929.
With the rank of Leading Aircraftsman and many thousands of miles of flying to his credit, he left the Air Force to join the ‘Police Force in 1934 and for a short while was stationed at Normanton. He came, to Wombwell in 1935 and has been very popular with fellow officers and well respected by the general public.
His friends at Wombwell will wish him every success in his new career. Mr. Barker has gone to Henlow this week and his wife and child will join him later
