The signature of the Chief Scout is now among the souvenirs treasured by the Wombwell (25th; Barnsley) group of Boy Scouts.
This is one of the interesting facts revealed in the annual report of, the company just issued by Group; Scoutmaster E E Lines.
The Chief Scout inspected the group) when he visited Barnsley in July of last year and in retaliation the group demanded that there and then he should sign on the, ‘dotted line.’ The autograph is now in the group log book with numerous other treasures, including a photograph of the Chief Scout chatting with members of the group on this occasion. Mr. Lines mentions that the group got into second place in, the L.A. Scoutcraft Shield competition. Four meetings of the group committee were held during the year and much good work was done. Mr S J Lisle and Mr J Upton had accepted membership. The group headquarters had been maintained in good condition lighting had been fitted in the stores and trestle table had been added to the troop room furniture.
The report gives due prominence to the kindly generosity of Miss D. Elliott J.P. captain of the Rangers’ Company, in organising a Christmas bazaar and social and Scout group, and mentions that £225 8s. 6d was raised. It Is stated: “This success was made posable by the fact that Miss Elliott had done a great amount of home buying and selling during the week before the effort, and some friends had given goods for the sale” Mr Lines offers the heartiest thanks of the group to Miss Elliott, her sister. Mrs C Snell, and all who helped In any way.
