Catholic Procession at Low Valley

Practically every Catholic family in the district was represented in the May Festival at St. Michael’s, Low Valley, on Sunday evening. Ideal weather prevailed and the sun shone brilliantly as the procession moved along Stonyford Road. To the hundreds of people who lined the streets the crowning of the Virgin by the tiny Queen at the flower-laden altar erected in the field adjoining the church was a beautiful and memorable sight.

The chosen Queen was Margaret Mary Dennett, of Wombwell, a pretty fair-haired child of six, who looked very picturesque in her long white satin beaute “period” gown, with lace Medici collar and coronet composed of lilies of the valley, her long white satin train was lined with pale blue net and a feature of the train was the gold decoration down the centre, representing a rosary.

She carried a beautiful bouquet of white lilies and tulips Preceding her was Bryan Finean, the crown bearer, an important little figure in a pale blue velvet suit and cloak and white cocked hat. He carried a cushion on which rested a chaplet of flowers. Embowered in narcissi an iris statue of the Blessed Virgin was carried shoulder-high along the street. Headed by the cross-bearer the pageant moved from the church to the end of Stonyford Road, back to the bridge, and then entered the field adjoining the church, where the crowning ceremony took place.
