Capt. A. E. Allott, J.P., Resigns

On grounds of ill health Captain Alfred Ernest Allott, J.P., “The Sycamores,” Hemingfield, has resigned his position as a Vice-President of the Barnsley British Co-operative Society.  He was first elected a Director of the B.B.C.S. in August 1916 and has been a Vice-President since 1935.

Born in Summer Lane, Wombwell, 72 years ago, Mr. Allott has a long record of public service in Wombwell. At 13 he commenced as a candidate, teacher under the late Mr. Michael Washington at Barnsley Road, Wombwell, and later went to Aberdeen Training College.  In 1895 when he was 23, he was appointed headmaster of Wombwell National School and in 1903 at Hemingfield.

Mr. Allott was a member of Wombwell UD.C. for 21 years and served several periods as chairman. He was also at one time chairman of the Dearne Valley Water Board, chairman of the Dearne District Light Railway Committee and vice-chairman of Wombwell Education Committee.

He commanded a battalion of the Home Defence Corps in the war and commanded the local Home Guard in the early part of the war. The late Mrs. M. J. Allott was a member of the Barnsley Board of Guardians for 15 years.  On her death, Mr. Allott had a church screen erected to her memory at Wombwell Parish Church.  There are two married daughters.
