Wombwell Lads to Pay Costs

Towing path episodes were described at Barnsley on Wedne6dav when the following were ordered to pay 2s. 6d. each costs for bathing in the canal: George Hulme, saw man, Brampton; John Hoyle, trammer, Wombwell; Fred Turner, haulage hand, Wombwell; Stanley Kaye. pony driver, West Melton; James C. Lingard, pit band, Wombwell: Alfred Duke, pit hand, Wombwell; Gerald Carby, motor driver, Wombwell; William Johnson, clerk, Wombwell; Jack Graham, haulage hand, Wombwell; and Stephen Bailey, apprentice, Wombwell.

Albert Kirk’ an official of the Sheffield Navigation Canal Co., said they had had many complaints of bad language and rowdy conduct from people living in the vicinity of the canal.

A constable said a number of boys ran away with their clothes under their arms and were caught two fields away.

One of the defendants said they could not afford to go to the baths.
