Brutal Assault at New Scarborough

Jude Gaskin, trammer, New Scarborough was charged with having assaulted his sister, Elizabeth Yates on 6 June.

Defendant pleaded guilty.

Complainant said she went to fetch her husband from her brother’s house about 10 o’clock on Friday night last, and defendant told her to shut her mouth, or he would shut it for her. She told him he dare not hit her, whereupon he struck her on the mouth, knocking her teeth out. He also struck her in the eye and knelt on her.

Elizabeth Larvin spoke as to complainant’s condition.

Defendant said she came for a bother and she got one.

The Chairman: Do you think you were justified in assaulting her then?

Defendant: Yes.

The Chairman: You will have to go to gaol for six weeks.
