Brampton Student Heads National List

A national distinction has been brought to Wombwell by 21-year-old Benjamin Cutler, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Cutler, 28, Concrete Cottages, Wombwell. He has won the City and Guilds of London Institute Bronze Medal for gaining first place in the final examination the “Fabrication of Steelwork” examination. Last year he won first place in the country in the intermediate stage of this national examination.

Benjamin celebrated his 21st birthday on the 20th of last month. Seven weeks ago his academic career was interrupted when he was called up for service with the Royal Signals. He is now stationed at Catterick Camp North Yorkshire, undergoing a 20 weeks course in radio.

Eldest of a family of five, Benjamin attended Brampton Ellis Junior school, going to Wath Grammar School on a County Minor scholarship. He gained his School Certificate and left school to work for Newton Chambers and Co. Ltd. From this firm he attended Barnsley Technical College where he studied for the City and Guilds examination.

While at school Benjamin was a member of Wombwell Church Lads’ Brigade and Wath Army Cadets. A bugler, he sounded the Last Post at Brampton church on Remembrance Day.

He is a keen footballer and a playing member of Wentworth F.C. His father, Mr. Benjamin Cutler, is a miner at Cortonwood colliery
