Gordon Rose Makes a Two Goals Dream Debut
Bridlington Town 3, Wombwell S.A. 3
AEVER holding a two goals interval lead, it was a disappointment to Wombwell Sporting Association to see Bridlington Town get in front, but other hand they can consider it no mean feat to take a share of the Yorkshire League spoils from this highly-placed side. A game of changing fortunes ended in a 3-3 draw.
This was one of the few matches which did not succumb to severe wintry conditions. From the previous Wednesday evening, Wombwell manager Henry Walters and Bridlington Town secretary were In constant contact by telephone, and following and inspection of the seaside ground on Saturday morning the “play on” decision was made and commuted to Wombwell.
All the lads turned up, and the bus journey to Bridlington was made. Two inches of snow had fallen on the ground but this provided a “cushion” which made the pitch playable.
Well Rewarded
The game went In two distinct phases. It took about ten minutes for both sides to settle down, and from that stage until the Interval Wombwell were definitely on top, serving up superb soccer. They played magnificent attacking football, and their efforts were well rewarded by a two goals advantage. ‘
After about 20 minutes SANDERSON hit a terrific shot into the roof of the net, and a quarter of an hour later a Sanderson “chip” over the goalkeeper allowed Gordon ROSE to head in.
All that was necessary to knock the heart completely out of Bridlington would have been an early second half goal by Wombwell, but Instead the cat swung the other way. Trailing by a couple of goals, Bridlington decided they had nothing to lose by playing five forwards up, and the gamble paid off with a goal soon coming after the resumption
Bridlington then threw everything into the game, and from then onward were definitely the better side. Wombwell were obviously struggling, and Bridlington got two more goals to put them In front for the first time.
In an effort to level things up, Henry Walters directed several team changes. Peter Dryden moving into the forward line, Geoff Leather to full-back. Briscoe to wing half
Oblique Angle
With minutes to go ROSE got another goal for Wombwell to share the points. This was a through ball from Sanderson, and as the keeper came out Rose hit the net from an oblique angle.
For Gordon Rose tide “dream debut”. Playing his first match for Wombwell after recruited from Mexborough turned out excellent work and the “spirit” or his presence proved to be infectious.
