Brampton Bierlow Man Fined
A Brampton Bierlow voluntary A.F.S. man was summoned at Rotherham on Monday for having driven a motor lorry and A.F.S. trailer pump without due care and attention at Carr Lane, Thrybergh, on July 6th.
The defendant, Joseph Whaling (36), motor driver, of 24 Knoll Beck Lane, was fined 20s., ordered to pay £2 4s. costs, and had his licence endorsed.
Mr. Donald Dunn. solicitor (of Messrs. Fenoughty and Dunn), appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty.
Herbert Lowe, butcher, of Adwick Road, Mexborough, said on July 6 at 2.45 p.m. he was driving towards Rotherham along Carr Lane, Thrybergh, at about 15 to 20miles an beer. As he rounded a left-band bend in the road near Thrybergh Club he saw a motor lorry coming towards him travelling at about 40 miles an hour. Witness pulled in as far as he could to his proper side and stopped his vehicle. The lorry swerved and witness thought something had happened. He went back and found that a trailer pump had become detached from the lorry and had overturn. The pump must have overturned as a result of the sudden swerve.
Mr. Dunn submitted that what actually happened was that a screw had broken and consequently allowed the pump to overturn.
