A Wombwell Champion
H. Stuart’s Barnsley Merit Success
Wombwell district won distinction in South Yorkshire bowls on Saturday when Herbert Stuart, a member of the Wombwell St. George’s Arms club, won the final of the Individual Merit Competition of the Barnsley Bowling Association.
Stuart is regarded as one of the most Promising players in the district, and his victory was the fulfilment of general expectations. His victim in the final was R. Smith, of Stainbotto’. Mr. A. Beaumont, of Barnsley, was referee, and the match was played on the Carlton Welfare green.
At the outset Stuart did not get the run of the green and at one point his opponent was leading by 17-12. Stuart, however, showed. his usual concentration and coolness, sending up every wood as though the decision depended upon it. Intense keenness prevailed. Once in possession of the jack, Stuart started short round pegging and Smith found it difficult to follow. With the the score at 20 all Smith had the jack, but Stuart beat him with his first wood.
Each of the finalists received a case of cutlery at the hands of the Rev. Norman B King, vicar of Canton.
