A Wombwell Retirement: Two Mexboro’ Promotions
After playing a leading part in the business and social life of Wombwell for 13 years, Mr. William Driver, Manager of Wombwell branch of the National Provincial Bank, of 78, Wood Walk, Wombwell, is to leave at the end of April to go into retirement at Saltford, between Bristol and Bath where he has bought a house. He is to be succeeded at Wombwell by Mr. D. Kane, now Accountant at the National Provincial’s Mexborough branch.
Began in Leeds
Mr. Driver was born at Pudsey and started his banking career as a junior clerk with the Union of London and Smiths Bank at Leeds. This bank was absorbed by the National Provincial and in 1925 Mr. Driver went to Sunderland as a clerk, afterwards being appointed Assistant Accountant. He moved to Rotherham as Accountant in 1937 and 10 years later, succeeded at Wombwell Mr. Geoffrey Maidment, who is now living in retirement at Worthing.
Mr. Driver has been a member of Wombwell Rotary Club since 1950 and has taken a prominent part in the work of the Parish Church as a member of the Church Council and as a sidesman. Mrs. Driver will be very much missed by fellow members of Wombwell Inner Wheel.
The couple have two daughters; Brenda is married to Mr. Tony Hazzard, a civil engineer with a firm of consulting engineers in London, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Hazzard, of the Milton Arms, Hemingfield. Barbara (20) better known as “Peggy” is reading English at Birmingham University.
In his retirement Mr. Driver will be living near Mr. F. L. Stook who retired as Accountant at the Wombwell branch
The New Manager
Mr. Kane began his career with the National Provincial bank as a junior clerk in the commercial bank branch at Bradford in 1925. In 1931 he left to work at the Selby branch and three years later went to Birmingham.
In 1941 he joined the army and until 1946 served with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. After demobilisation he went to work in Keighley and three years later left to take up an appointment as Senior Clerk at Huddersfield.
After six years at Huddersfield, he came to Mexborough where he has been Accountant for four and a half years. A married man with one son Mr. Kane lives at 123, Doncaster Road, Conisbrough. He is a member of Doncaster Art Club.
Taking over as Account at Mexborough will be well-known local amateur actor Mr. Philip Edward Jubb (39) of 19, Church Street, Mexborough.
Keen Amateur Actor
Mr. Jubb began his career in banking at the Wicker (Sheffield) branch of the National Provincial Bank. Since then, he has worked at Oldham, Chesterfield, Lincoln and Melton branches of the bank. He has been at the Mexborough branch for nearly two and a half years. A native of Batley, Mr. Jubb is a keen amateur actor and has taken several leading roles with Mexborough Green Room Club.
