Conisbrough Boy’s Success in Wombwell Event

Yorkshire schoolboy cross-country champion, Graham Brown, 15-years-old agricultural student at Brampton Ellis School, who lives at 4, Elder Grove, Conisbrough, was first home in a cross-country championship event open to senior schools in the Wombwell, Hoyland, Wath and Conisbrough areas.

With a time of 14 minutes 1 second Brown knocked 1 minute 4 seconds off the record set up last year.

Winners of the race, which was run on a team basis, were Wombwell County. Secondary Boys’ School. The captain, Barry Picker, received the championship trophy from Mr. Tom Wooley, a Vice-President of the Barnsley Co-operative Society, by whom the award was originally donated.

Other members Of the Wombwell school team were Barry Gillis, Alan Storey, Brian Wood, Graham Hambleton, Graham Bannister, Kenneth Hardy and Geoffrey Hancocks. To win the team event, Wombwell County Secondary School gained 6th,-7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 21st places.

Other schools taking part were Brampton Ellis, Conisbrough Modern, Wath Park Road Modern, Hoyland Kirk Balk, Mexborough Adwick Road and Mexborough Dolcliffe Road.
