Assistant Scoutmaster Called Up.
A vacancy difficult to fill was caused yesterday when Assistant Scoutmaster Cyril Lines, of Barnsley Road, left Wombwell to re-join the Royal Corps of Signals with which he once served in India. He has been called to the colours as a reservist and expects to be away from three to six months.
Meanwhile the Wombwell group of Scouts, Cubs and Rovers will feel his loss keenly. For years he and his brother, A.D.C. E. E. Lines, along with A.S.M. Ralph Connelly, who will have to do his work temporarily, have practically carried Wombwell scouting on their backs. For “Bosun” Cyril, who, though playing the manly part, has retained a boy’s outlook, every member of the group has had the greatest respect and admiration. His cheery smile and good spirits have been infectious.
A.S. Lines served in the Royal Corps of Signals from 1928 to 1974 and for two year; was in India, first at Jubbulpore and then at Trimulgherry, where he was a wireless operator. His technical knowledge has proved of great value in the practical training of Scouts. He has taught the boys semaphore and intended to go on to morse so that they might be useful in a national emergency. He is returning to wireless work and may be an instructor to new militiamen. “I am quite looking forward to getting back to my old job,” he told a “Times” reporter.
The district Scouts assembled for a traditional “sendoff” at their headquarters at Wombwell Main on Wednesday night.
A.S. Lines has been employed by Saville and Co. at Wombwell, as a bricklayer, and was present when a remarkable trove of Saxon and early Norman coins were unearthed a few days ago at Whiston.
