Appointment of Secretary of Wombwell Labour Party

Appointment.

Mr Tom Newson, Snowdon Terrace, Wombwell, has been appointed secretary of the Wombwell Labour Party to succeed Mr Mark Upperdine of Low Valley, who has left the district to take a post in Cumberland.

The appointment was made at a meeting of the party at Wombwell on Saturday. Mr. Newsome has been associated with the Labour movement at Wombwell for more than thirty years.

He was a member of the Wombwell U.D.C. for six years and is still a member of the Staincross Assessment Committee under the West Riding County Council. He was first appointed a member of the Mitchell Main branch of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Association in 1913, and for 20 years has been the branch delegate. For a long time he has been president of the Wombwell Hospital Committee, and in that capacity has taken a leading part in organising a number of successful carnival events.

He was born at Blacker Hill but has lived in Wombwell from infancy.

During practically the whole of its career he was a director Wombwell Midland League Football Club.
