An Airman’s Luck.

Wombwell Boxer’s Miraculous Escape.

A well-known Wombwell boxer, “Ernie” Stephenson, brother of the welter – weight fighter, Ben Stephenson, has been involved in an aeroplane smash in Egypt, and is now lying in hospital suffering from such injuries as will, it is thought, put an end to his boxing career. In the same accident Stephenson’s officer was killed.

Formerly employed at the Cortonwood Colliery By-Product plant, Stephenson joined up in 1917, and went East some 12 months ago, subsequently rising to the rank of 1st Air Mechanic. He has done a great deal of glove fighting in Egypt, and was looking forward to a successful career in the ring on his return to civil life. He holds several valuable trophies won in Regimental. Boxing Tournaments.
