An “Accidental” Discovery.
Wombwell have engaged several local players this season, and Charles Allen, the left-wing forward from Darfield, is one of the more promising.
He started his career with Darfield Bridge, and his record is unique in that he was away from school several years before he kicked a ball. It was only when someone persuaded him to fill a vacancy in the team that it was discovered that he was a born winger. It makes one wonder how many “gems” of football are still undiscovered!
Anyway, having got his opportunity, Allen seized it firmly. In junior football his name was carried far, and the officials of the Darfield Club, who have brought out many class players, were quick to realise his possibilities. While at Darfield he had a trial with Preston, and last season got linked up with Barnsley. With Truswell in form on the left wing, Allen may have to be accommodated elsewhere, and if so, it is a pity; Allen will do well in any inside forward position. He is young, strongly built, and very fast.
